Notes on a Valentine Birthday

By robie2

I was born on Valentines Day many moons ago. I have had a lifetime of heart shaped cakes and gifts wrapped in red and white tissue and I have loved every minute of it.I've enjoyed being a Valentine Birthday girl so much that I hope to mark off many more Valentines Days on my calendar before I blow out that final candle on the cake.

Valentines Day has a wonderful energy. There are no heavy religious or patriotic overtones. It is all about love, romance, flowers and chocolate. Personally, I'm more into chocolate these days than romance, but it used to be the other way around. There is something for everybody on Valentines Day. Toddlers. geezers, and everybody in between--everybody has a good time.

If you are going to be born on a holiday, Valentines Day is definitely the one to choose. First of all, when people ask you when your birthday is and you tell them, they always smile and usually you get a big "awwwwwww" too. Secondly, there is a good chance that they will actually remember your birthday, it being an international holiday and all. And last, but certainly not least, a Valentine birthday is better than Christmas as you don't have to compete with the baby Jesus for attention and nobody is going to give you a combination birthday and Christmas gift, although you will end up with a lot of heart shaped items.

Since I have always really regarded Valentines Day as my personal property,I know a lot about it. I've always thought it was nice that the world had a holiday to celebrate on my birthday, but to me, especially when I was a child, the main event of the day was, in the immortal words of Miss Piggie, "moi."

Nevertheless, I've picked up a bit of Valentine info over the years.

Who Was St. Valentine Anyway

It seems there were at least three St. Valentines, all of whom were priests and martyrs. Even the Church is not sure which St. Valentine is which, however, St Valentines Day was made official by Pope Gelasius in 496AD. The celebration of February 14th as a special day for lovers goes back much further, to the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia.

The eve of Lupercalia ( February 14th) was set aside to honor Juno, queen of the gods and patroness of women and marriage. The names of Roman girls were placed in a jar and the boys picked the name of a girl out of the jar at random and the two were paired for the two weeks of Lupercalia. Many betrothals and marriages came out of this custom. Lupercalia itself was basically a fertility festival in honor of Lupa, the she-wolf who is said to have suckled Romulus and Remus the legendary founders of Rome. Later it became associated with the mating of birds and the rebirth of Spring. The custom of marriage lotteries was carried over to Valentines Day celebrations in medievil Europe. Cards and love letters were associated with the holiday by the 16th century. The traditional lacy heart shaped valentine came into vogue in Victorian times. These days, whether it's kindergarteners cutting and pasting paper hearts, courting couples dining by candlelight, or teenagers texting one another Valentine greetings it's still all about love and romance.

Who could ask for a better day to be born on?

Just because I love vintage valentines and have been given a lot of them over the years, I'm including a selection of vintage heart shaped jewels currently available on ebay. They are in a capsule just below this hub and update automatically. Have a look and consider one of them for the valentine in your life. Nothing says valentine better than a locket or beautiful piece of vintage jewelry.

Happy Valentines day to you and your sweetie and Happy Birthday to me

Great hub, Robie! Will mail your birthday card tomorrow, but since there's no chance of dining with Sean Connery on ValDay, have decided to keep the chocolates for myself. ;-)

Happy Birthday and Happy Valentine's Day, Robie; what a nice day to be born. My girlfriend in NY is one day after Valentine's, so I never forget her birthday, and she will be receiving flowers from me from me, she deserves it, has been my friend for over 30 years. :)

Thumbs up!

Way cute!  You've got to love how most if not all Catholic hey days originate in ancient pagan customs :-)  And I guess you're right, if you've got to be born in a holiday, this is a cool one to make an appearance!

I hope not to forget to send a bday card, Valentine's Day isn't so big in my neck of the woods, but let's be plain and clear already: Chocolates don't travel well by email, so I'm keeping those! Laugh!

Hello everyone and thanks for stopping by and for the birthday wishes. So Jama-- Sean Connery is busy on V-day 'cause he's having dinner with me LOL. VS-- happy birthday to your girlfriend in NYC. Elena--yeah most Christian holidays have pagan roots if you look closely. Christmas was Saturnalia etc. Not a bad idea to co-opt the old religion into the new-- those early Church fathers wereno fools. and Pam thanks for the birthday wishes.

Happy Birthday! You were so fortunate to be born on the day that signifies love and romance and sharing love and caring with others. I'll betcha I'll remember your birthday in the years to come, too. And thank you for the so-interesting history of Valentine's Day: Don't we all need a little pagan genes and history to spice up our lives?!!

Happy early birthday! I would love a Valentine's Birthday! In my family, we hit a number of holidays (my son on Halloween, my hubby and I - right before Christmas, my sister the day before Independence Day, etc.). Due to my son, we have quite the black and orange collection.... But I digress! I hope you really enjoy your dinner with Sean Connery. LOL! And many more heart-shaped birthday candles in the future.

My cousin has a Valentine birthday, just like you. Thank goodness Hallmark and a couple of other card publishers actually make Valentine / birthday card combos. It's been a delight to go looking for them. Now, all the publishers have to do is add the concept of "cousin" or "friend" and I'll love them forever. OOPS...maybe I should be writing those messages and selling them to the publishers!

Many happy returns to you, Robie. Indeed, the holiday is your personal property. And thanks for the great info on the history.

hi, my brother's birthday is on Valentine's day... he will be 22 this year and is actually not very fond of having his day on Valentine's day. he feels like girls (remember he is in the younger dating stage) make the day all about them and he isnt able to have a birthday day all to himself:(. I personally love that his Bday is on Vday, he is such a love bug that is it perfect for him! So, do you have any suggestions on how to make the day extra special for him?!

robie2 profile image

robie2 Hub Author 2 years ago

Well, first I think your brother must be a great guy since he was born on such a great day. He just needs to be ok with the fact that although he knows the really big event is his birthday, not everybody does-- the rest of the world thinks it is Valentines Day. He should just pretend they are celebrating his birthday because, in a way they are-- oh yes and to make the day special-- just concentrate on the birthdayness of it not the Valentine aspect-- he's feeling outdone by St. Valentine. Tell him that it could be worse-- he could have been born on Christmas:-)

Happy Valentines Day

Happy birthday to you and all the other Valentines. My granddaughter is a Valentine birthday, too-- so was my Mother-in-law, and a cousin and a great-neice. (Are any boys born on that day?) (Oh I just read the post above-- still it seems more like a girl's birthday.)

I have a friend with an older sister born on Feb 14. She always said that having her sis be The Valentine was bad enough, but what made it worse was that my friend was born on Ground Hog's Day.

robie2 profile image

robie2 Hub Author 15 months ago

Thanks for the birthday wishes Rochelle-- wow you have a lot of Valentine birthdays in your life. I had a next door neighbor for years who was my astro-twin, but have really not known very many -- and your poor friend.... I am cracking up at the idea of having a Groundhog Day birthday.

Fantastic Hub Valentine Girl. I had no idea there were three St. Valentines. Hysterical about ending up with a lot of heart shaped items, I hadn't thought of that, but does make for a cheery disposition to year round decor. A perfect birthday/holiday indeed. Happy Birthday robie2!

Thanks Frieda--I think it is just the best holiday birthday to have( but then I may be just a teensy bit prejudiced:-) Thanks for the birthday wishes
